GBP suspension · Step-by-step

Google Business Profile suspended: how to fix it and get your GBP back, step by step.

Your GBP is suspended and your calls dropped 60% overnight. Here's what to do, in order, and what to expect.

Full disclosure: I run a reinstatement service for GBP suspensions. But even if you don't use me, the steps below are the same ones any good agency will follow.

1. Figure out why it was suspended

Google usually sends an email to the GBP owner account. If you don't see one, check your GBP dashboard, the “Suspension” notice usually explains the category. The most common:

  • Quality issues — virtual address, virtual office, or PO box
  • Keyword stuffing — business name has “best plumber Bristol cheap”
  • Multiple profiles — you have a duplicate GBP you forgot about
  • Address inconsistency — GBP address doesn't match your website
  • Website issues — your website is down or marked suspicious

2. Gather your evidence

Before filing the reinstatement form, gather:

  • Utility bills (gas, electric, water, council tax) showing your business name at the GBP address
  • Photos of your business signage at the address
  • Pictures of the inside of your premises
  • A photo of you holding a newspaper at the address (Google sometimes wants this)
  • Vehicle registration if you're a service-area business
  • Insurance documents with the address

3. Fix the underlying issue

Before filing the appeal, fix whatever caused the suspension in the first place. Filing an appeal for a quality-issue profile without changing the address gets a fast rejection. Don't waste the appeal.

Most denials are because the evidence was not enough, not because Google will not reinstate. Add more evidence, file again.

4. File the reinstatement request

Go to your GBP dashboard → Manage this listing → Info → Request reinstatement. You'll see a form. Keep it short and factual. Don't explain at length, just state what you fixed.

5. Wait (and what to expect)

Google says 3-5 business days. In practice it's usually 7-14. The dashboard I built tracks the appeal status automatically so you know exactly where you are.

6. If you're denied

You can re-appeal immediately. Most denials are because the evidence wasn't enough, not because Google won't reinstate. Add more evidence, file again.

Honest scope

I can't guarantee reinstatement, Google makes the final call, and they're not always consistent. What I can do is give it the highest possible chance of success by getting the evidence right and addressing the actual cause.

Tell me what happened and I'll tell you what I think is the right next step. If I can't help, I'll tell you that too. If your GBP is currently suspended and you want the appeal handled, that's the GBP Reinstatement service — £250-£400 flat fee, appeal submitted on your behalf, full case management through the back-and-forth with Google.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Google Business Profile suspension last?
Honest range: 7 days for a clean soft suspension with strong evidence, 4–6 weeks for a hard suspension requiring full documentation. Google does not publish a guaranteed timeline and the actual wait depends on the queue length when your appeal is reviewed, which varies month to month.
Should I create a new GBP while the suspended one is being appealed?
No. Creating a duplicate profile during an active suspension is the single most common reason Google extends the suspension to a harder category and (in some cases) hardens it into a permanent ban. Wait for the reinstatement decision before doing anything new.
What evidence does Google actually want in a reinstatement appeal?
Three categories. (1) Identity proof: business registration documents, utility bills, professional licences where applicable. (2) Address proof: photos of the physical premises with signage visible, Google Street View match. (3) Operations proof: photos of work in progress, staff, vehicles, branded materials, dated customer invoices. The appeal needs at least one item from each category, dated within the last 90 days.
Can I do the reinstatement myself, or do I need an agency?
You can do it yourself. The process is documented on Google Support. The reason agencies exist for this work is that appeal writing is iterative: if your first appeal is rejected you need to diagnose which category of evidence was insufficient, gather more, and resubmit. Most DIY appeals fail on the second iteration because they resubmit the same evidence. If your first appeal is rejected, getting help on the second is usually cheaper than the lost month of being offline.
Will my rankings recover after reinstatement?
In most cases yes, but not immediately. GBP suspensions typically knock the listing out of the local pack entirely. After reinstatement, expect 2–6 weeks to climb back to your pre-suspension pack position, depending on how long you were down and how competitive the niche. Active work on reviews, posts, and Q&A during that window speeds recovery.
What if my appeal is rejected?
You can resubmit with stronger evidence. There is no formal cap on resubmissions, but Google starts to flag patterns of repeated low-quality appeals. If your second appeal is also rejected, pause and rebuild the evidence package from scratch before trying again — different documents, different photo angles, fresher dates.
